Picton Newcomers Network

We are all trying to help prevent the spread of Covid19 so our activities and events will be on hold for a while.

Due to Covid19 our activities and events will be suspended for the time being.

You can still join our Networks through 'Join Us' - and we will connect by way of email. That way we can add you to the mailing list, so we can keep you updated when activities will start again.

In the meantime, take good care, avoid close contact with others, especially with the elderly, wash your hands well and often and be kind to yourself and others.

About us

Picton is picturesque waterfront town in the Marlborough Sounds. It is Marlborough’s main commercial port and provides access to Queen Charlotte Sound and the Marlborough Sounds.

Our Coordinator: Cathy

Hi, I’m Cathy.   Picton was our holiday destination and with our four children we enjoyed all the Marlborough Sounds attractions, particularly on the water.   Now my husband David and I are happily living here permanently and enjoying the relaxed laid back lifestyle, while our adult children live in Australia (thankfully we have one daughter nearby in Nelson).

I’m a trained ESOL tutor and this year David and I took a group of volunteers to a school in Tonga to help out with renovations, classroom teaching and activities.   I also love singing with the Acappella Belles, particularly over Christmas when we sing at the ferry terminal as the boats arrive and depart.

Picton Newcomers started in December 2014 and I’m excited at the possibilities of welcoming newcomers into our thriving small community of diverse cultures, as they seek to settle into a new life here.

Please join us, I look forward to meeting you!

PS: Here are some of the things you could participate in!

‘As the sun was setting and the lights were twinkling over Picton on the evening of Thursday 16th May, the Irish Bar and Pizzeria hosted a Pizza and Wine Tasting evening.   It was a full house and 20 Picton Newcomers tempted their tingling tastebuds with tasty mouth watering pizzas hand made by Neal in his new pizza oven.   As well, we all tried our hand at ‘design your own’ pizza on a tabletop pizza oven demonstrated by Sue from the Provedores in Picton.   There was a wonderful sense of conviviality as French, Italian, British and Kiwi met, mixed and mingled over lively conversation, food and drink.   We are looking forward to enjoying more of these later this year so if you are new to Picton watch this space for the next one and other events. ‘

Had a lovely time on May 12th – Tuesday – Coffee Morning, Seabreeze Cafe, Waterfront, Cnr London Quay and High Street, Picton! Our next coffee morning will be some time in June.

And Planned for later in the year –
  • International pot luck dinner (you bring your favourite dish)
  • Educational presentation at the new National Whale Centre in Picton
  • Walk on the Link Pathway presently under construction between Havelock and Picton
  • Another pizza tasting night
  • Twilight cruise on the Lady Margaret
  • Fish and chips at Shelley Beach, Picton
  • Christmas coffee morning
